Why change political parties?  I've never been in office; it's not cut and dry.  Many factors came into play; this has been something that has been on my mind for quite some time and it didn't happen overnight.

In the latter part of 2018, I met with Dyana Limon-Mercado, to let her know that I had changed parties.  I'll try to make a long story short; I was raised in rural east Texas and joined law enforcement at the age of 22.  I would have to say that the vast majority of the people that I have been around tended to lean more conservative, including my parents.  Dyana and I had a chance to visit for over an hour, I would like to thank her for the opportunity to explain my actions and to prove to her that I am committed to being the best I can be.

In late 2016 I started looking at real people that represented the Democratic party.  Margo Frasier, Greg Hamilton, Sally Hernandez, Randall Slagle, Gisela Triana, and Robert O'Rourke to name a few.  At the beginning of 2018 for the mid-term elections, I went to several events and listened to people like Kim Olson, Julie Oliver, Mike Collier, Randall Slagle, and Robert O’Rourke.  I had a brief opportunity to talk to Beto, but his message of bringing people together and everyone being welcome interested me.  His response to taking a knee during the national anthem resonated with me.  Me being prior military. I've always said stand for the flag -  until I heard his response, it had never even crossed my mind why someone would do otherwise.  That gave me another new perspective and helped me to understand why someone would.  Regardless, if you agree or not -  We are a FREE people...

I spoke with Judge Slagle a while back saying - "You know when you first ran, I was not a supporter, however, I have seen how you treat your people, what you have done for the court and I am now a 100% supporter of yours".   You never really know what the other side of the fence is like until you take a step over, have an open mind and give it a chance.  In the last year and a half, I have met some great people that have helped me make my mind up to make the switch.  Even though it hasn’t been easy, especially with my law enforcement friends and acquaintances.  However, those that know me have been supportive and understanding, and know too; there are good people on both sides of the political aisle.

It's about understanding and respect; we can always agree to disagree.  Like I was saying earlier, some of the things that Beto said I had never thought about or even attempted to try and understand until I decided to listen.  We all have different life experiences that have helped mold the person we are today, we must realize that by coming together we are stronger, and everyone has a right and should be themselves.

I only ask that you give me a chance...
